Perpignan, 13 miles - this ancient city was once coveted by Spain and repeatedly changed hands during Medieval times until finally becoming French territory in 1659. It’s a lovely city to explore on foot, strolling in the shade of palm and plane trees.
Collioure, 23 miles - the port of Collioure is a popular seaside resort. This lovely town has recently been the centre of the artistic movement “Fauvism”, known for the painters’ use of vivid colours.
Chateau de Castelnou, 25 miles - the castle of Castelnou at Thuir was built 988 – 990 to act as a military centre for the area. The building is the best example of a medieval fortress left in Roussillon today.
Carcassonne, 45 miles - the city of Carcassonne is a perfectly restored medieval town set on a steep bank overlooking the River Aude. The first ramparts were built by the Romans between the 3rd and 4th Centuries but were then improved in the 13th Century through fear of a Spanish invasion.
Argelès-sur-Mer, 65 miles - the seaside resort and fishing village of Argelès-sur-Mer is located on the southern Mediterranean coast about 15 minutes drive from Perpignan. This popular town boasts beautiful sandy beaches and rocky coves with the backdrop of the dramatic mountain terrain of the Alberes hills.
