Camping holidays near Quiberon, southern Brittany

The town of Quiberon is perched at the end of the Quiberon peninsular on the D768 road 15 Kms off the coast of southern Brittany, and around the town there are a few extremely well run, clean and busy campsites. The peninsular starts very near to Carnac and la Trinite sur Mer which are also well known camping/mobile home holiday destinations.A beach on Quiberon

We have stayed in a couple of those and found them to be as good as any we have stayed in during the past 40 years.

The rest of the peninsular, on the way to the main drag, is rather a dump but never mind that because you won't see it again until you return to the mainland.

Quiberon town stretches up from the bottom of the town where there is ample parking 100 metres away from the shops and right up the top of the rather steep hill to the top of the town where the main shops are located. This is a clean and rather upmarket town with one supermarket at sea level and another just out of town, so you will never be scrounging round for food & drink during your stay there.

Walks are rather limited here but there is plenty of scope for rockpooling, shell gathering and gathering oysters from the rocks. Among the rocks you will find some wonderful sand for sunbathing.

The market is held every Saturday morning all year round on Place du Varquez, in the centre of Quiberon. You can find fresh produce, regional specialties, crafts, clothing and many other stalls and every day local fishermen bring their catch to the same spot in the morning. The fish and seafood is as fresh as it can be!Port Haliguen nr Quiberon

Within walking distance is the town of Port Haliguen, and this must be one of the most beautiful towns in France! Take a walk just out of town and look at the houses there. They are all gorgeous and different! Property for sale here is akin to finding hen's teeth; it doesn't come onto the market very often and when it does the weathy French people snap them up in a trice.

Markets here are from mid-June to mid-September in Port Haliguen, every Wednesday morning from 8 am to 1 pm

The bad bits

One of the saddest things about camping Quiberon is that slap bang in the middle of all the camping sites is a private aerodrome from which small aircraft take off and land from early in the morning until 8 or 9 pm at night. Their noise can become quite tiresome but, having said that, if you normally live with city noise you may not even notice this.

Now that wouldn't be so bad if people were told about it before they spend their hard earned money, but have you ever seen mention of an aerodrome at the end of the Quiberon peninsular where all the camping sites are? Neither have we. However, if you have read about this aerodrome in a paper brochure or online we would be grateful if you could let us know about it please?
