Towns associated with the campsites we feature:
A small but exciting little camping town, Lacanau Ocean in the Gironde Dept of Aquitaine is a mecca for surfers - and plenty of nightlife too!
Camping Lit et Mixe is close to a superb fishing & surfing beach, the town being just inland from the beautiful Cote d'Argent.
Located in Landes, Biscarrosse Plage is another surfing paradise on the coast of Aquitaine and only 200 yards from the town too!
Camping Messanges is right on the coast and has long stretches of sandy beaches with water sports, walking, cycling & surfing here too.
The upmarket resort of Biarritz is the undisputed European centre for surfing & other water sports - you can pop over to Spain from here too.
Labenne Ocean in Landes, Aquitaine is a lovely, scenic little place with plenty of water sports & surfing, but for nightlife you must go to Biarritz.
Set in the Gironde, Hourtin Plage is a tiny little place with long sandy beaches; small it may be but it is big on surfing.
The coastline of Aquitaine starts at the southern tip of the mouth of the river Gironde, that mighty river which splits further south and flows through Bordeaux, the other part being the river Dordogne, and I leave you to guess where that one comes from.
Camping holidays in Aquitaine just have to be mentioned in the same breath as watersports, the main one of which is surfing as without question the coast of Aquitaine has the best surfing in Europe and the further south you go the better it can be up to a possible 12 metre surf near the French/Spanish border near to St Jean de Luz.
So Aquitaine is the place to combine a camping holiday with a surfing break where you can expect 5 metre surf on a regular basis.
Where to go and what to see in Aquitaine? Well obviously Bordeaux needs visiting though we recommend catching a Park & Ride outside the city rather than driving in and scrabbling for a parking slot. R&R is cheap here and it runs about every 20 minutes.
As aforesaid, this is a huge area so advising someone where to visit is rather useless unless you know where they are staying, but if you have fuel in your tank then the Dordogne, which is a department of Aquitaine, is always worth visiting, and you will be amazed at the scenery, the facilities for walking and cycling holidays, horse trekking etc.
Camping holidays here in the Dordogne, Lot et Garonne, Landes and the Pyrenees-Atlantiques are described on other pages.
